John D. Tent, 1944-2008

Respected Monadnock Board member for decades

John "Jack" D. Tent, 64, of Keene, died Dec. 21, 2008.

He was born in Ridgewood, N.J., Jan. 15, 1944, son of James and Virginia (Foster) Tent.

He attended schools in New Jersey and graduated from Glen Rock High School in 1962, where he was a three-sport athlete.

He was most proud of becoming an Eagle Scout recipient in 1960.

Mr. Tent went to New England College in Henniker, where he met his wife, Stephanie, and graduated in 1967 with a bachelor of arts degree in business.  As an alum, he was awarded the William Troy Award in 1992, presented by the NEC Alumni Association to honor those who shared William Troy's attributes of service, dedication and leadership.

After a year of teaching, Mr. Tent went on to sell life insurance for several years, and moved to Keene in 1972, where he continued with insurance until he started his career in real estate.

Mr. Tent was a well-known Realtor who co-owned Brown and Tent Realtors in the late 1980s.  More recently, he had worked for The Masiello Group since 1996.

He also served in a variety of community service roles, including past campaign chairman of the Monadnock United Way in 1977, past chairman of the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Grand Monadnock Arts Council.  He had been an active member of the Keene Lions Club since 1974.

Mr. Tent enjoyed skiing, tennis and golf.  He was a member of the Keene Country Club and the Indoor Tennis Club.  He also enjoyed traveling and reading, especially books on history.

Survivors include his wife, Stephanie A. Tent of Keene; two daughters, Courtney J. Tent of Boston and Meredith A. Tomassetti and her husband, Matthew, of Nottingham; a granddaughter, Amelia R. Tomassetti, also of Nottingham; a twin brother, James F. Tent of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Penelope A. Galpin of Atlanta; three nephews, John Tent, Wayne and Daryl Conte; and two nieces, Virginia Tent and Amanda Galpin.

Services were held Jan. 5.  Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Keene was in charge of arrangements.

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his memory to the Monadnock United Way, 23 Center St., Keene, 03431.
